of a maximum of 20 clients at a time.
Assist 5 clients in becoming drug free for every 24 wks of contact
with Nafas.
Provide relapse prevention strategies that empower the drug user
and their families to resist further drug use and criminal behaviour.
To increase the number of Bangladeshi drug users willing to receive
community based treatment.
Target young people under 18 who are not yet in contact with existing
services, as well as those older users requiring treatment.
We believe that to effectively assist drug users to make changes
in their lives the assistance must be whole-istic. This means
that the time and space must be provided for the drug user to
reassess every aspect of their lives. The reason for this is that
the use of drugs impacts upon every aspect of an individuals life
: the mind, the body, the spirit, the sleeping patterns, the family,
the community, the finances...... ‘Treatment’ then
should be broad and able to address these interconnected aspects
of an individuals life.
Nafas DCP is under contract to the
London Borough of Tower Hamlets but available, through community
care funding, to clients from other boroughs. For costs please
contact the DCP Team Leader. The DCP is particularly available,
after assessment, to...
drug users who have not been in contact with treatment services
before.
Opiate users who are have recently detoxed or who are in the process
of detoxing.
Those who have recently come out of residential rehabilitation
as an after care facility.
Individuals dependent on Crack and other stimulant drugs.
Those who are over 16 years of age.
People from the Bangladeshi community in particular and drug users
generally.
All new clients go through an initial assessment when they first
enter the DCP. All assessments take place on Mondays and Wednesdays.
However, may vary from week to week depending on the work load
of staff. At this stage we aim to provide all relevant information
to clients regarding general drug related knowledge, harm reduction
and their options as far as treatment is concerned. The initial
assessment allows Nafas and the client to assess the clients suitability
for the DCP and to see whether or not a positive relationship
can be built between the two. The assessment will also focus on
the client's motivation as the programme demands considerable
levels of self-determination.
If the client was not suitable for
the DCP then options for referral would be discussed with them.
If they are suitable for the service they will be g iven a date
to commence the 2 week induction period which would start with
a full assessment and the allocation of a key worker. The full
assessment will assess the clients’ physical, social, legal,
psychological, spiritual and health related status. From this
the DCP staff will negotiate a care plan.
The care-plan will outline the treatment
which the client will access throughout the initial 12 week period
along with the days and times of attendance. The care-plan is
part of a negotiated agreement between the service and the client
which includes what the service expects of each client and vis-versa.
Keywork sessions focus very much upon the care-plan and DCP dynamics.
These sessions will assist the client in meeting their objectives
and making adjustments to the plan whenever necessary as well
as being a time to bring specific day to day issues regarding
the service. One-to-one talk therapy, on the other hand, allows
the client to discuss issues which are perhaps wider and deeper
than key working.
The DCP has ‘core therapies’
and ‘additional therapies’. Every client is encouraged
to access core therapies as part of their care-plan. These include
auricular acupuncture, relapse prevention, talk therapy and key-work
sessions. Additional therapies comprise all other therapies which
are moulded to make up the care-plan. These include :
Aromatherapy
Shiatsu massage
Drugs Education
Identity and Difference
Offending behaviour
Health and Nutrition
Champissage (Indian head massage)
Contemplation
Full body acupuncture
On completion of the 12 week programme
clients are offered aftercare support. This is also available
for clients who are drug free after treatment from other services.
The level of this support is dependant upon the client and would
usually consist of talk therapy, acupuncture andsupport groups.
LOCN accredited training and subsequent access to volunteering
also make up the aftercare package. The idea here is to continue
to build confidence and abilities in order take part in the community.
Referrals are made by services, significant
others or by the clients themselves. Services will need to fill
in a Nafas referral form and send this to us or give it to the
client to bring in before a appointment can be given. Please note
that due to our schedule we are not able to give assessments without
an appointment. Clients who ‘drop-in’ for advice or
information alone will usually be attended to but anything more
extensive than this will also require an appointment. The best
thing to do is always phone first.
The DCP seeks to continuously ensure
that clients play an active role in all stages of their care,
from the formulation of their initial care plan, through all the
activities and groups they attend. We seek to foster client ownership
of the programme setting and, within this learning
environment, to take responsibility for their own learning.
Client attendance, agreed at the
care-planning stage, is worked out according to their own availability,
probationary requirements and so on. Clients who do not attend
more than 2 agreed sessions without informing staff members will
be put on hold for 1 week. If the DCP is not informed by this
time with a valid reason their place on the programme will be
given to a client on the waiting list.
Key workers are responsible for monitoring
care-plans and conducting evaluations that allow for measurement
of change as well as continually identifying and reviewing short/long
term objectives. Clients are regularly invited to offer criticism
of the service and make suggestions as to changes that could be
made. This is done through a variety of methods including groups,
key work, questionnaires and an anonymous suggestion box.
